LEAD-DEADWOOD LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS

DEADLINE IS MARCH 4, 2013

The following local scholarships are available to Lead-Deadwood High School seniors at LDHS.  Application forms may be obtained in the Guidance Office or on the school's website. Completed forms must be returned to the Guidance Office no later than 3:30pm on MARCH 4, 2013

AG TRUCANO CO. SCHOLARSHIP $500 (VOCATIONAL OR COLLEGE)

Two scholarships will be awarded to students who have demonstrated work ethic and citizenship. One scholarship will be given to a vocational student and the other to a college student.

  

 

THE GUY N. & MABEL BJORGE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP $500

 Scholarship will be awarded to a Lead-Deadwood senior with high scholastic attainment in science or mathematics, to be used at any college or university in the United States; eligibility to be based on scholarship, school citizenship, and to a lesser extent: need.  

 

 

JANE BROWN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP $300 (COLLEGE)

 Scholarship awarded to a senior furthering their education. 

 

BRUST MEMORIAL ($600) (COLLEGE)

In recognition of 60 years of dedicated service to the Lead-Deadwood School District and to the communities of Lead & Deadwood by Edla & Franklin Brust, this memorial scholarship is awarded to the graduating senior who exemplifies the ideals set forth in the Bellamy Awards Program, patriotism, leadership, citizenship, work ethic and dedication to learning.

 

 

BYRNE - YEAGER SCHOLARSHIP 2/$500 (VOCATIONAL OR COLLEGE)

Given in memory of Virginia Byrne and Bill Yeager. Awarded to a senior wishing to attend a post-high school educational institution. The recipient must have a "C" average after seven semesters of high school. Financial need is a consideration.

 

 

DEADWOOD DENTAL / EYE CARE $250 (2 AWARDS) (COLLEGE)

Candidate must maintain a B average and be of good character, and have a desire to enter optometry, dentistry or other health care fields.

 

DEADWOOD HIGH SCHOOL REUNION SCHOLARSHIP $600 (VOCATIONAL)

Awarded to a senior planning on attending a vocational school. Preference will be given to a student whose parent/grandparent graduated from Deadwood High School.

 

DEADWOOD HISTORIC PRESERVATION $1000 (COLLEGE OR VOCATIONAL)

Students are required to write an essay to specifically explain and give examples of how you would use your college major or vocational training to advance historic preservation in your community.

RENA DUNN PIANO SCHOLARSHIP $300 (VOCATIONAL OR COLLEGE)

Awarded annually to a student planning to attend a college, university, or technical school. Candidates must perform in a piano solo competition.

 

 

 

 

 

FRANCES AND WALTER GREEN SCHOLARSHIP (VOCATIONAL OR COLLEGE)

 Amounts vary

Available to seniors planning to attend college, university or a vocational school. Judged on academic record, extra-curricular record and a 100-word essay on future educational plans and career goals.

SELMA HEBERT SCHOLARSHIP $1000 (COLLEGE)

Awarded to the highest-ranking senior boy and girl. The recipients must attend college the summer or fall following graduation. No application necessary.

HISTORIC DEADWOOD-LEAD ARTS COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP $750

Awarded to a student who has art participation in high school and will most likely make art a major part of their life after high school.  A 500 word essay is required.

 

THE HOMESTAKE MINING COMPANY SCHOLARSHIP (COLLEGE)

(2/$1,500)

Awarded to a graduating senior at Lead-Deadwood High School.  This scholarship is based on academic record, leadership, extracurricular accomplishments, ACT scores, school & community citizenship, financial need and self description of interests & goals.  No employment affiliation necessary.

 

HOMESTAKE VETERANS SCHOLARSHIP$400 (VOCATIONAL)

Four awards are given to students who are planning to attend a vocational technical school. Preference is given to students whose parents or relatives have worked at Homestake.

 

 

WALTER KEIL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP LEAD VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT $500

Awarded to a senior boy or girl wishing to continue his/her education at a vocational school or post-high school institution.

 

 

THE KIWANIS SCHOLARSHIPS $1000 (2 AWARDS) (COLLEGE)

Granted to students who rank in the top 25% of their class. Need is the chief criteria. Awarded each year to one girl and one boy.

  

LDEA SCHOLARSHIP $200 (COLLEGE)

For a senior planning on going into the field of education at a South Dakota school.

 

USBC YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP (2 AWARDS) (VOCATIONAL OR COLLEGE)

The Deadwood-Lead USBC Youth Bowling Association is offering two $250.00 Scholarships to one Senior Boy & one Senior Girl.  Must be a current member of the Deadwood-Lead USBC Youth Association, have bowled 3 out of the last 4 years in a sanctioned Youth program. 

THE ROBERT H. KRUG MEMORIAL $1,000 (COLLEGE)

This scholarship is awarded to a senior planning to become a professional educator, especially in mathematics, science or administration. 

 

LEAD-DEADWOOD WOMEN’S CLUB SCHOLARSHIP $500

 This scholarship is awarded to a student who is planning a career in education.

 

 

HELEN MORGANTI SCHOLARSHIP $500 (COLLEGE)

Awarded to a student who plans on attending college and majoring in journalism.

 

 

 

ROSS OMMEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP $300(COLLEGE

This scholarship is given in memory of Ross Ommen.  It is awarded to a senior student who has shown athletic accomplishment and academic excellence in sciences.

MARGERY L. ORR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP $800 (COLLEGE)

 The scholarships can be used at any accredited four-year college or university. Seniors ranking in the top 20 percent of their class scholastically, on the basis of cumulative GPA through the fall semester of their senior year, are eligible to apply.

 

VICKILYN PODOLL SCHOLARSHIP $100 (VOCATIONAL OR COLLEGE)

Awarded by Job's Daughters Bethel #11 in memory of Vickilyn Podoll. Recipient must be an active member of Job's Daughters Bethel #11. The scholarship may be used at any post-high school educational institution.

JACK RANTAPAA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP $125 (VOCATIONAL OR COLLEGE)

Given by Virginia Rantapaa to a senior boy who excels in athletics, particularly football. The recipient should display strong leadership and sportsmanship qualities. No application.

 

THE RODGER A. ROTTER SCHOLARSHIP $650 (COLLEGE)

Scholastic achievement ("B" average) will be the primary consideration for this scholarship, with need a secondary consideration in selection.  The recipient must attend The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

 

CHUCK SEDERSTROM SCHOLARSHIP $2,500

Two $2,500 scholarships will be given to a senior attending LDHS and attending Black Hills State University in the fall. Preference going to (1) student with a Deadwood zip code & (1) with a Lead zip code.  Scholarship is based upon several factors, with the primary being need. 

 

 

RALPH AND MARY SHERMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP $1,000 (COLLEGE)

This scholarship is payable in 8 semi-annual increments of $125 for 8 semesters. Applicant must be a son or daughter of a regular member in good standing of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 18, Lead, or Chapter 23, Deadwood; /Golden Star Lodge #9, Lead, or Lodge #7, DEADWOOD AF & AM.

 

 

MINNIE STANLEY ENGLISH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP $1,000

This scholarship is given in memorial of Minnie Stanley.  Students are required to write a one to two page essay on any topic of interest.

 

 

MARIE STEARNS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP $400 (COLLEGE)

Awarded each year to a female. Criteria includes scholastic achievement, attitude and desire to continue her education, and participation in co-curricular activities for at least three years. Student must have lettered during her high school career and must have a "B" average or higher.

 

STUDENT COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP $250 (COLLEGE)

Student must rank in the top 2/3 of the graduating class and having shown qualities of leadership while at LHS. Available for students planning to attend vocational school or college next fall.

 

 

ANDREW THOMAS SCHOLARSHIP $1,000 (COLLEGE)

Awarded by Andrew Thomas, former LHS graduate, to a student who plans to attend Black Hills State University. Criteria will be financial need and an essay entitled Overcoming a Personal Crisis, explaining how the student effectively dealt with a problem.

 

TWIN CITY ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB 2/$200 (VOCATIONAL OR COLLEGE)

Student of a Booster Club Member planning to attend a college/vocational school is eligible. To apply, students must write a brief paragraph, How did participation in extra-curricular sports help you?

 

JOHN C. VUCUREVICH MASONIC BODIES SCHOLARSHIP $500

Awarded to a senior planning to attend either college or vocational school commencing in the next fall semester. Criteria are as follows: academic achievement, character, attitude, and co-curricular involvement, and financial need. Must have a relative who is a member of the Masons.

 

 

UNITED STEELWORKERS LOCAL 7044 – 2 / $500 (VOCATIONAL OR COLLEGE)

Citizenship, character, participation in school activities, and need, will be considered. Applicants must document membership of parent, grandparent(s) or relative in the United Steelworkers Union, Local 7044.

 

KAM LEUNG WONG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP-$500

Applicants are required to write a five hundred-word essay covering the history and impact of early Chinese and Wing Tsue in Deadwood or other topics related to Deadwood history. In addition to the essay, GPA, good citizenship, and contribution to school and community will be considered
